The Beijing Institute of Big Data Research was established in 2015 under the guidance of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Beijing Municipal Government. It was jointly supported by the Zhongguancun Management Committee, the Haidian District Government, Peking University, and Beijing University of Technology. It is the first comprehensive platform in the field of big data and artificial intelligence that integrates talent cultivation, scientific research innovation, industrial transformation, and think tank consultation. In 2019, the institute was awarded the title of 5A-level social organization by the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau and the title of "Beijing Big Data Talent Training Demonstration Base" by the Beijing Municipal Economic and Information Technology Bureau. It is also the supporting implementation unit of the National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data Analysis and Application Technology. By fully leveraging the multi-disciplinary comprehensive advantages of Peking University, the institute was initially composed of a research team including 4 academicians and nearly 100 doctoral supervisors. It has multiple innovation research platforms, including the Deep Learning Laboratory, the Natural Language Processing and Cognitive Intelligence Laboratory, the Data Management Laboratory, the Big Data Security Laboratory, the Big Data Analysis Technology Innovation Center, the Economic Big Data Center, and many other centers and laboratories. It has also incubated several highly promising technology enterprises.

The Xiamen Industry Innovation Center of Beijing Big Data Research Institute and Xiamen Beidu Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Research Institute are innovative research institutions jointly established by the Xiamen Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, the People's Government of Siming District, Xiamen, the Management Committee of Xiamen Torch Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone and Beijing Big Data Research Institute with the support of the Xiamen Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Xiamen Municipal Government. The research institute focuses on the development of big data analysis and application technologies, conducts key technology research and development, cultivates innovative technical talents, builds think tank consulting services and promotes rapid industrial transformation, aiming to build a leading domestic platform for big data forward-looking research and technology transfer.
